Passport to Friendship - A Social Skills Group for Kids

 

    Passport to Friendship is a program for children who have difficulty interacting with others. It teaches   basic social skills, such as eye contact and knowledge of personal space, that will help them interact appropriately in social situations and more easily make friends.

    How do I get my child involved?

1. Fill out a questionnaire and return it to Positive Results Therapies in person, by mail, or fax.

2. You will be contacted to schedule an appointment for your child to participate in a group activity with 2-3 other children in order to evaluate his or her appropriateness for the program. You will also fill out a standardized assessment regarding your child’s social skills at this time.

3. You will be contacted at a later date and informed whether or not your child has been selected for the program.

 

4. If your child has not been selected, his or her application will be kept on file for future groups and tips will be provided as to how to get your child ready for participation in the program.

 

    Membership Criteria

1.    Must have a desire and /or the motivation to make friends

2.    Ability to have a reciprocal conversation with an adult with minimal to moderate assistance

3.    Articulation intelligible enough for others to understand most of the time

4.    Attend and follow three to four step verbal directions

5.    Ability to attend to a group activity with minimal running away (visual supports can be used)

6.    Spontaneous language (minimal repetition of others)

7.    Receptive language at the five year old level or above

8.    Some imaginative skills

9.    Parent commitment to follow through and practice skills on a weekly basis

10. History of good attendance

    Program Details

Age Range: 10-12 years old; however, children 5-10 years old may also apply, as additional groups will be created based on need.

Diagnosis: Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome, Social Anxiety Disorder, or general social difficulties.

Number of Children: 5-8
