   What is Speech-Language Therapy?

   Speech-Language therapy is needed when individuals exhibit speech and language difficulties that decrease their abilities to effectively communicate their thoughts, wants, and needs.

 

   Who could benefit from Speech-Language therapy?


   Adults who have:

  • Difficulty swallowing food or drinks

  • Slurred, slow, or hard to understand speech

  • Suffered a stroke or other brain injury

  • Difficulty thinking of words following a stroke or other injury

  • Difficulty with memory following stroke or other injury

  • Difficulty pronouncing certain sounds/words or who stutter

  • A voice that cracks, is too high, low, is hoarse, or is otherwise unpleasant

 

   Speech-Language Pathologists specialize in the treatment of:

  • Aphasia: Loss of acquired language most commonly resulting from stroke, brain injury, progressive diseases, tumors

  • Apraxia: Difficulty producing speech correctly due to inability to program the muscles used for speech

  • Dysarthria: Slow, slurred, or labored speech resulting from muscle weakness or damage

  • Aural Rehabilitation: Improving communication skills for individuals with hearing impairments

  • Dysphagia (swallowing): Inability and/or difficulty swallowing appropriately.

  • Voice Disorders: Difficulty with rate of speech, volume, pitch, nasality, quality, and stress

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): Loss of abilities such as memory, problem solving, comprehension, production, attention, or others resulting from a head injury (i.e., car accident)

  • Foreign Accent Reduction: Available to adults fluent in the English language, but wanting to improve pronunciation and/or reduce accent
