   Physical Therapy for Lymphedema

 

   What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the swelling of a body part, most often an arm or leg. Lymphedema is caused by a disturbance to the flow of fluid in the lymphatic system; often the result of a surgery, trauma, and/or biopsy involving the lymph nodes.

 

   Who is at Risk?
Anyone who has had either a lumpectomy, mastectomy, or lymph node dissection is at risk. It can also develop in the legs of men and women who have had abdominal surgery or radiation for cancer such as: ovarian, prostate, or any cancer where lymph node dissection is required. Lymphedema can also be present at birth or developed at the onset of puberty from unknown causes.

 

   Signs and Symptoms of Lymphedema

 

  

  • Isolated swelling to an individual limb and immediate trunk area

  • Feeling of tightness or heaviness in the limb

  • Less movement or flexibility of the hand/wrist or ankle/knee in the affected limb

  • Swelling does not decrease with elevation

  • Lymphedema can occur immediately after surgery, weeks, months, or even years later

 

 

   There is no cure for Lymphedema; however, the effects can be reduced and controlled with prompt reporting of symptoms to the physician and treatment by a qualified therapist.
